Winter 2013 Hairstyle Trends for Teens

Let winter sweep you away with this fun look that is easy to achieve and can work for both day or night time fun!

Side Swept Asymmetrical Short Cut

Side Swept Asymmetrical Short Cut Light Brown Side View
How To:
1. After washing and conditioning hair with a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, apply a medium hold styling cream or gel.
2. Blow dry hair with a flat paddle or vent brush on the straight side, and move to a medium to small round brush on the flipped side. When flipping ends out, place brush right against your head near the scalp, turn wrist to begin wrapping hair half way around brush and blow air from underneath. Slide round brush slowly down hair length while drying to avoid getting too flippy.
3. Set your flat iron to the lowest setting for your hair type, and section the back and side into two and secure with clips.  Bring down 1-inch sections and begin flat ironing, keeping the iron at a consistent speed and tension. Touch up any flips that may need some taming.
4. Apply a small amount of wax or paste into palm of hands, work through to activate product and use your fingers piece out the ends of your hair.
Recommended Products:
When choosing a wax or pomade, you want one that will not appear greasy or weigh your hair down. Try Pravana Twist fiber paste. It has fibers in it to hold your style while never building up.
Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
A heart or diamond shaped face looks amazing in this style, while medium textured hair that is straight will work best.
Tips:
Love this color? Ask your stylist for a piecey highlight with light caramel tones and an all over chestnut brown. Don’t be afraid to try other color combinations too. Light gold with copper, bright red with mahogany – the options are endless!

Violet Haze

Short and sassy, yet inviting! This haircut paired with a cool violet and pieces of copper shining through will get attention everywhere you go.

How To:
1. Apply a thickening styling lotion in damp hair.
2. Blow dry hair with a vent brush, directing it off to one side and slightly over in the fringe area.
3. For extra lift through the front and crown, use a flat iron on a low setting to lift hair at root. Turn iron on an angle and slide through ends.
4. To finish your look, mist with your favorite hairspray and run fingers through to create a soft separation.
Recommended Products:
Label.m Thickening Cream has a soft hold while adding thickness and volume to fine hair. It is available at local hair salons, so check Label.m’s website for a location near you.
Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Beauties who sport an oblong or diamond shaped face with fine textures will find this style a breeze to style.
Tips:
A duo tone color looks fresh and fun, but can be tricky to create yourself. Talk to your stylist about different techniques and color combinations that will suit your style best.

Bringing the 80’s Back

That’s right, the 80’s are back! With this fun twist on the popular 80’s crimped style, all of your friends will be green with envy.

How To:
1. Apply a medium hold blow dry gel, such as Redken Blown Away, to damp hair.
2. Blow dry hair with a medium round brush, lifting at root area for extra volume.
3. Once hair is completely dry, turn on a mini crimper to the lowest heat setting for your hair type.
4. Section hair into a top section (eyebrow to eyebrow), and secure with a clip. Take bottom section and brush down to center of the back of your head. Secure with a clear elastic as far down towards the ends as you can. Turn ends under, and tuck underneath. Secure with bobby pins.
5. Drop down the top section. Apply a heat protection spray throughout this entire section. Taking 1 to 2 inch sections, crimp hair starting between 1 – 2 ½ inches from scalp. Leave fringe straight.
6. Apply a smoothing serum to your hands and rub together to activate. Lightly apply to ends of hair to smooth any flyaways.
Recommended Products:
A heat protection product is a styling must! Try Pravana’s Keratin Fusion Thermal Insulator Spray for lightweight protection from all of your favorite heat styling tools.
Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Medium to fine textured hair that is straight or wavy, paired with a round or heart shaped face will look amazing in this style.
Tips:
Blonde is an amazing color, when done correctly. At-home blondes can go wrong so easily, so make sure to consult your stylist to discuss all of your bonding options.

Side Curls

Sleek and sophisticated! This style will have you ready for a date night out, wedding or party.
Side Curls Sweet Formal Brown Style
How To:
1. Apply a medium hold gel to damp hair. Blow dry with a paddle or vent brush, keeping hair close to the head through scalp area.
2. After hair is completely dry, section it into threes (each side and back) and secure with clips.
3. Using a 1-inch curling iron, curl 2-inch sections that you have brought down from larger sections. Mist each curl with hairspray and let cool.
4. After the entire head is curled, create a deep side part on the desired side. Bring hair over to side and section into three sections. Take the top section, gather into a tight ponytail and secure with clear elastic. Continue with next two sections, placing ponytails close together.
5. Using bobby pins, place curls to hide ponytails. Mist with your favorite hairspray and you’re ready to go!
Recommended Products:
Not all curling irons are created equal. Visit your local beauty supply to check out some great brands (like Hot Tools, my favorite!) at affordable prices.
Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Any face shape or hair texture can wear this sleek style! You’ll just need enough length to pull hair over to side.
Tips:
Don’t worry if your hair has fringe (or bangs). Simply style them over to the side that you have brought the rest of your hair over to. Add a sparkly clip or flower to match your outfit for a little fun!

Curls, Curls, Curls!

These beautiful flowing curls will draw attention to you the minute you walk into any room!

How To:
1. After washing hair with a sulfate-free shampoo and moisturizing conditioner, apply a medium hold gel like Pravana Curves curl enhancing gel.
2. Blow dry hair using a medium round brush, making sure to part hair and dry to desired side.
3. Section hair into three to four sections and secure with clips.
4. Using a curling wand, begin curling 1-inch sections of hair, winding them in alternating directions. Mist each curl lightly with hairspray and let cool before handling.
5. When you reach the section of hair at the top of your head, hold your curling wand at an angle and wrap pieces away from your face. Lightly curl the ends of your fringe to blend with the rest of your hair.
6. Mist curls with a fine shine spray and give them a shake to separate and soften.
Recommended Products:
I love a shine spray that not only provides shine, but also smells fabulous! Pravana’s Seal and Shine satisfies both of these prerequisites.
Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Round, heart, square or triangle shaped faces twisted with medium to thick, wavy to curly hair will hold these curls all day!
Tips:
Highlighted hair gives curls dimension and interest. You don’t have to go overboard, start off with a partial highlight or face framing highlights. Another great way to try highlights out is through clip-in extensions. Find them at your local beauty supply, bring them in at your next haircut and your stylist can help blend them into your hair and find the best placement.

The Bold and the Beautiful!

Bright color paired with some interesting texture is a hot trend this winter. Try this look out for your next night on the town or date.

How To:
1. Apply a straightening cream to damp hair. Blow dry with a paddle or vent brush. While blow drying, make sure to brush front sections back to make pinning back easier.
2. Section hair in three to four sections and secure with clips. Apply a heat protection spray to each section as you crimp lightly with a fine or mini crimping iron. Let each section cool.
3. Take the top mohawk section of your hair and apply a small amount of volumizing powder at scalp. Lightly tease hair at scalp and pull towards back. Mist with hairspray.
4. With a comb, bring sides back and secure with overlapping bobby pins. Using your comb, cover pins with top section.  Spray again with hairspray to hold all night!
Recommended Products:
Volumizing powders are a new sensation!  When a small amount is applied, it creates volume, lift and a bit of “grit” to hold your style. My favorite pick is Label.m Resurrection Dust.
Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Heart or oval shaped faces with medium density hair work best for this textured look.
Tips:
After crimping your hair, you want to keep hands off as much as possible. This will help to prevent any frizz from forming.

Waterfall Braid

The hottest trend this year is the waterfall braid. It’s easy and can be dressed up or worn casual, either way you’ll have the hair everyone is talking about!
Waterfall Diagonal Braid for Long Hair
How To:
1. Starting with clean dry hair and mist a sea salt spray through hair to give it some texture.
2. Using a large, 1 ½ inch curling iron, curl ends of hair. Make sure to let each curl cool before touching.
3. Once you establish where you want your part to be in the front, create a small section and divide it into three.
4. Begin to French braid this section, adding hair on the top section, but when you go to add hair in on the lower section, drop down the section that is in the braid, and add a new piece of hair from the length of hair. Continue this pattern across the back of your head. When you reach the other side, you have two options: secure the braid at the top near the hairline with a clear elastic, or continue the braid down through the length of hair.
5. To create a double waterfall braid as in the picture, go back to where you started the first braid and repeat steps to make a second braid, making sure to add the dropped down pieces into this braid.
Recommended Products:
A sea salt spray helps to add some grip to your braid and hold curls in all day. I recommend Label.m Sea Salt Spray. Layer it to create crazy texture or for very fine hair.
Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Any face shape or hair texture can wear this fun braid. Curly haired ladies can skip the curling iron and go with their natural curls. If you think your hair may be too short to pull this off, give it a try, you may be surprised on how easy it is.
Tips:
To really jazz this look up, try tying a ribbon in your hair and incorporating it into your braid. Just make sure to keep it in the braid, even if it’s in the hair that should be dropped down.

Kickin’ Pink and Takin’ Names!

Make sure you’re ready for all of the attention you’ll attract by going with an all over pink hue! Attitude and spunk are a must for this style.

How To:
1. After shampooing hair with a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, apply a straightening cream through your ends and a root volumizer through your scalp area.
2. Blow dry hair using a flat paddle brush, switching to a medium round brush through the crown area.
3. Using a flat iron on the lowest heat setting for your hair type, smooth your ends.
4. If you still need a little extra lift at your crown, back comb with a fine tooth comb or backcomb brush.
5. Smooth sides back and pin just above your ear. To get a bobby pin in nice and tight, overlap in a criss cross pattern.   Brush fringe to side and mist with your favorite hairspray.
Recommended Products:
One of the most important hair care products that will make or break a fashion color in your hair is your shampoo. Sulfate-free shampoo is a must! Try Pravana’s Color Ensure shampoo. It smells great and will keep your color on your hair and not going down the drain.
Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Diamond and heart shaped faces look best with this sides back look. Fine to medium textured hair that is straight makes this look a breeze to style.
Tips:
When changing your color drastically, be prepared to give your makeup an overhaul as well. After your color appointment at the salon, ask your stylist or the salon’s makeup artist for a makeup lesson for your new hue.

A Punch of Purple

Who says you are limited on options when you have short hair? Check out this hot new cut with an amazing punch of purple.

How To:
1. Apply a sea salt spray to damp hair. Using a vent brush, blow dry hair in the direction you want to style it in.
2. When drying the length through the top, use a small round brush and roll hair going back.
3. Rub a pomade or fiber paste through hands to activate. Always start with less because you can always add more. Work product through hair, pinching and lightly pulling to create texture through sides and top.
4. Finish hair with your favorite shine spray.
Recommended Products:
Finding the perfect paste is a hard task because you don’t want too goopy, sticky or heavy. Try Pravana’s Twist! It has special fibers to hold your style, while it easily washes out and never builds up.
Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Heart, oval and diamond shaped faces with thick, straight hair rock this look best.
Tips:
The base of this style is a great haircut. Ask your stylist for a little length on top and lots of texture throughout. One of a stylist’s favorite things is pictures, so don’t forget to bring yours along for your hair appointment.

Chained French Braid

Braids are the hottest trend this year. By adding some funky chains it brings the trend to a whole new level! Get ready to rock this hot braided look.
Chained French Braid Medium Brown Side View
How to:
1. Start with dry hair or even next day hair. Apply a dry shampoo through scalp area and comb through. This gives you a nice base and grip for your braid.
2. Section front area of hair into three and begin braiding. After adding hair to each side section, hold braid in one hand and lightly tug to create volume in the front.
3. Continue French braiding hair down the back of the head. When you get to the area behind your ears, begin adding chains into the braid. Attach them into hair with bobby pins.
4. Finish braid off by securing with a clear elastic and misting with your favorite hairspray.
Recommended Hair Products:
Dry shampoo is not only for second day hair.  Use it to get grip and volume in even freshly washed hair.  My favorite is Pravana Fresh, it kills 99% of odor causing bacteria and gives amazing volume!
Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Any face shape can wear this fun braided look, while long curly, straight or wavy textures that are medium to thick are a breeze to braid.
Tips:
No extra chain necklaces hanging around?  Try the jewelry section at your local craft store. You’ll find every color and texture!
This winter, the hottest trends range from chained braids, to crimped texture to funky color!  If you’re feeling daring, why not give multiple trends a try? Just remember to take care of your tresses. Sulfate-free shampoos, heat protection and deep conditioners will be a must to keep your hair in tip top shape during the cold season.
