The chemicals used in many if not most over the counter shampoos and conditioners, contain very harsh ingredients such as 'ammonium laurel sulfate' which can actually dry your hair out, and cause breakage and split ends. Even worse, many contain a form of silicon, and that can be very bad for your hair.
5. Don't constrict your hair with tight bands, hats, braids and the like. These also lead to split ends and hair breakage.

There are many hair myths and sadly perhaps, even hairstylists who should know better circulate some of this Hair Voodoo. Here are the scientific FACTS about the top ten hair myths:
1. Cutting your hair makes it stronger or grow faster.
Bull winkle. Its hair, not a lawn. Exactly where this myth started is unknown, but is probably related to the observation of men's facial hair. There are different kinds of hair on your face and head. Hair on your head and facial hair have different properties. Cutting your hair will only make it shorter and hairs grows almost exactly half an inch per month, no matter what you do or take.
2. Split ends can be repaired.
Sorry Charlie, not true. Split ends cannot be repaired and should be cut off immediately or they will split yet higher and do yet more damage.
3. Brushing your hair is good for it.
To the contrary, brushing your hair is very bad for your hair and the leading contributor to split ends and hair breakage. By all means groom your hair, but once it is in place, STOP.
4. Tight hats cause baldness.
This one probably started in the military where young men entering the service were required to wear hats and soon showed signs of going bald, or at least of hair thinning. This is due to coincidental timing. The age that young men enter the military is also the same age that male pattern hair loss begins. This is due to dehydrocorticosterone, not hats. Hats do cause hair breakage and to a lessor degree to split ends.
5. Hair can turn gray or white over night.
What utter nonsense. This one was born in literature. What part of "fiction" did they not understand? Hair receives its color genetically and can only turn gray or white over very long periods of time. Actually the hair doesn't turn white in as much as the hair loses color, but not over night, or even a wild weekend.
6. Pluck one gray hair and two grow back.
Folks, if this were true I would be pulling my hair out by the fist full. I need more hair and can always color the gray hair.
7. Baldness is inherited from the mothers side of the family.
More Hair Voodoo. Male and female pattern hair loss can be inherited from either side of the family and may or may not skip many generations. Male pattern hair loss usually begins at age 18 to 20 and female patter hair loss between ages 45 and 55.
8. Dandruff is caused by dry scalp.
Dandruff and dry scalp are two entirely different things. A good shampoo and conditioner will take care of the dry scalp, which is 'flaking'. Dandruff shampoos are entirely unnecessary and inadvisable for dry scalp.
Dandruff is a serious health issue and requires medical attention and prescribed medication. The 'flakes' are actually oily, not dry. Very few people have actual dandruff and you would know it if you did.
9. Dandruff is contagious.
No. You already have the micro organism that causes dandruff, yours just aren't as active. On the other hand, there are plenty of nasty things you can get from someone else's comb or brush, so be careful.
10. Cutting your hair during a full moon makes it grow in healthier, fuller, faster or longer.
Give me a break. I am not even going to dignify this one with an explanation. Hey, if they buy into this type of earth muffin drivel, by all means, let them mark the dates on their calendar.

Bringing the 80’s Back

That’s right, the 80’s are back! With this fun twist on the popular 80’s crimped style, all of your friends will be green with envy.

How To:
1. Apply a medium hold blow dry gel, such as Redken Blown Away, to damp hair.
2. Blow dry hair with a medium round brush, lifting at root area for extra volume.
3. Once hair is completely dry, turn on a mini crimper to the lowest heat setting for your hair type.
4. Section hair into a top section (eyebrow to eyebrow), and secure with a clip. Take bottom section and brush down to center of the back of your head. Secure with a clear elastic as far down towards the ends as you can. Turn ends under, and tuck underneath. Secure with bobby pins.
5. Drop down the top section. Apply a heat protection spray throughout this entire section. Taking 1 to 2 inch sections, crimp hair starting between 1 – 2 ½ inches from scalp. Leave fringe straight.
6. Apply a smoothing serum to your hands and rub together to activate. Lightly apply to ends of hair to smooth any flyaways.

1. Apply a medium hold gel to damp hair. Blow dry with a paddle or vent brush, keeping hair close to the head through scalp area.
2. After hair is completely dry, section it into threes (each side and back) and secure with clips.
3. Using a 1-inch curling iron, curl 2-inch sections that you have brought down from larger sections. Mist each curl with hairspray and let cool.
4. After the entire head is curled, create a deep side part on the desired side. Bring hair over to side and section into three sections. Take the top section, gather into a tight ponytail and secure with clear elastic. Continue with next two sections, placing ponytails close together.
5. Using bobby pins, place curls to hide ponytails. Mist with your favorite hairspray and you’re ready to go!

Curls, Curls, Curls!

These beautiful flowing curls will draw attention to you the minute you walk into any room!

How To:
1. After washing hair with a sulfate-free shampoo and moisturizing conditioner, apply a medium hold gel like Pravana Curves curl enhancing gel.
2. Blow dry hair using a medium round brush, making sure to part hair and dry to desired side.
3. Section hair into three to four sections and secure with clips.
4. Using a curling wand, begin curling 1-inch sections of hair, winding them in alternating directions. Mist each curl lightly with hairspray and let cool before handling.

1. Apply a straightening cream to damp hair. Blow dry with a paddle or vent brush. While blow drying, make sure to brush front sections back to make pinning back easier.
2. Section hair in three to four sections and secure with clips. Apply a heat protection spray to each section as you crimp lightly with a fine or mini crimping iron. Let each section cool.
3. Take the top mohawk section of your hair and apply a small amount of volumizing powder at scalp. Lightly tease hair at scalp and pull towards back. Mist with hairspray.
4. With a comb, bring sides back and secure with overlapping bobby pins. Using your comb, cover pins with top section.  Spray again with hairspray to hold all night!

Waterfall Braid

The hottest trend this year is the waterfall braid. It’s easy and can be dressed up or worn casual, either way you’ll have the hair everyone is talking about!

How To:
1. Starting with clean dry hair and mist a sea salt spray through hair to give it some texture.
2. Using a large, 1 ½ inch curling iron, curl ends of hair. Make sure to let each curl cool before touching.
3. Once you establish where you want your part to be in the front, create a small section and divide it into three.
4. Begin to French braid this section, adding hair on the top section, but when you go to add hair in on the lower section, drop down the section that is in the braid, and add a new piece of hair from the length of hair. Continue this pattern across the back of your head. When you reach the other side, you have two options: secure the braid at the top near the hairline with a clear elastic, or continue the braid down through the length of hair.
5. To create a double waterfall braid as in the picture, go back to where you started the first braid and repeat steps to make a second braid, making sure to add the dropped down pieces into this braid.
